Wednesday, June 21st, Pine Grove students participated in a unique celebration to mark National Aboriginal Day. In conjuction with our Learning Commons, Pine Grove hosted a "Human Book" event at the school. A total of 23 members of our community told their stories to small groups of students; topics included residential schools, breaking down stereotypes, addiction, becoming an RCMP officer, homelessness, biking across Canada and Chinese traditions to name a few. Every presenter had a personal story to relate the event highlighted for students the diversity and strength found within our own community. The event also honoured the oral tradition of storytelling, so important in the aboriginal culture. A huge thank you to all our "Human Books" and to Ms. Davenport, Ms. Pettitt and Ms. Rowand for organizing this very powerful and successful celebration.
